On this date, two programs written in BASIC run simultaneously on the General Electric GE-225
mainframe computer at the college.

Ten years later, a version of BASIC written by a young Bill Gates and Paul Allen will be included on the Altair, the first personal computer. It will also be included in a simple personal computer (PC) to be developed much later by IBM.
On June 13th, Nelson Mandela, a leader in the African National Congress along with six associates begins a life prison sentence at Robben Island. The group will remain incarcerated for 26 long years.

On October 15, it is announced that Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev has been removed from office. He is succeeded by two men, Leonid I. Brezhnev as Communist Party Secretary and Alexei N. Kosygin as Premier. The transition appears relatively peaceful.
